Local History Buffs Rejoice!

Duane Hart from The Photo Restoration Studio in Redcliffe has spent many painstaking hours compiling, editing and restoring historic photos from the Redcliffe region into an awe-inspiring book entitled: The Pictorial History of Redcliffe.

Duane has been a local to Redcliffe for twenty years. During that time, he’s been collecting land maps and old books on Redcliffe. His book is a stunning pictorial with his entire collection of maps, old photos and excerpts from books pre-1949. Duane has been restoring images for customers for over ten years now along with picture framing for the last seven years.

The book is due for release in September this year. It features pre-1949 land map photos and old advertisements from a variety of publications and family collections on the Peninsula.

The extensive collection includes paintings of early Redcliffe from the State Library and photos from a number of rare books on Redcliffe that have been donated to Duane for the purpose of beeing restored and included in the book.

Take a flight down the Redcliffe coastline from a 1946 Aerial map – keep watching until the end of the video, an overlay of a modern map to show how Redcliffe has developed in the last 70 years is quite remarkable!

Duane is still looking for submissions for the book, if you have any old pre-1945 photos or books on Redcliffe. Credit will be given in the book plus a free signed copy of the book if the photos are published, as a way of thank you.

Duane runs the Framing Shop in the Cominos Arcade, if you would like to come to see the collection in person. The opening hours of the store are 8:30am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday and Saturdays 8:00am-1:00pm.

A Sunshine Coast man has had a lucky escape after a shark bit off the back of his kayak in Moreton Bay this afternoon.

The 39-year-old man was paddling towards Mud Island in a group of 9 people when his kayak was attacked and began to sink around 8 kilometres east of Woody Point.

Water Police responded to the man’s Triple 0 call and were able to track his location by using incoming aircraft to Brisbane Airport.

The man was rescued by water police just before 4pm and his damaged (formerly) 6.5 metre kayak was also recovered from the water, sporting a large hole from where the shark had bitten into it.

The man from Maroochydore was returned to his vehicle at Bulimba Point uninjured although quite shaken and glad to be out of the water.

Sergeant Gordon Thiry from Brisbane Water Police said it was very fortunate they were able to find the man in time.

“We would encourage anyone heading out on the water to always wear a life jacket, carry an EPIRB and make sure you let someone else know where you’re travelling to and how long it will take,” he said.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is urging local residents and visitors to take care during this week’s predicted king tide event.

Higher than normal tides are expected to impact the South-East Queensland coast between 8am, Friday 10 March and 11am, Monday 13 March, 2017.

King tides are a natural part of the tidal cycle and are predictable. A king tide can cause coastal flooding, even on a clear, sunny day. It is also important to know that king tides have always occurred and are not a result of sea level rise.

Coastal areas within the Moreton Bay Region including Beachmere, Bellara, Bongaree, Dohles Rocks, Scarborough and Toorbul may experience very minor and localised levels of inundation or coastal erosion.

These effects may be witnessed in our region in the lead up to and following the high tide event with the following expected peaks:

• 2.75 metres (1.51 metres AHD) at the Brisbane Bar at 8.06am on Friday, 10 March
• 2.78 metres (1.54 metres AHD) at the Brisbane Bar at 8.51am on Saturday, 11 March
• 2.76 metres (1.52 metres AHD) at the Brisbane Bar at 9.31am on Sunday, 12 March
• 2.71 metres (1.47 metres AHD) at the Brisbane Bar at 10.06am on Monday, 13 March

Motorists are urged not to drive through roads that have salt water over the road. 

Local residents and businesses in coastal areas should consider securing their property; remove any tinnies, boats, kayaks and any other items away from the water before the event, and sandbagging property where required.

If you’re concerned about impacts around your property, council will be providing sand and sandbags at Margate, opposite council depot, Jull Street, Margate.

People should bring a shovel to these locations to help fill their sandbags. For more information about council’s sandbagging locations and ‘how to’ advice see disaster management – sandbags

Beachgoers should heed the advice of surf lifesavers at patrolled beaches in the region.

Summer is just around the corner and Meteorologists are forecasting a heatwave to welcome in the new Season.

A heatwave is defined as three or more days of high Maximum and Minimum temperatures for a region. The heatwave conditions are expected to start on Thursday, with Friday seeing the highest temperatures and could potentially last for five-six days.  Dry air coming from western Queensland will send temperatures soaring over the weekend.

Redcliffe and surrounds are likely to miss out on the worst of the heatwave conditions due to the saving grace of our sea breeze. Areas further inland are expecting to see 40C+ temperatures.

Heatwaves are responsible for taking more lives than any other naturally occurring weather phenomenon.

The Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service and Energex are all in preparation stages and will be on high alert during the heatwave.

Please keep an eye on your fellow Community members, especially the elderly, young, pregnant, manual workers and those with medical conditions. Do not leave children in parked cars during a heatwave, temperatures in a vehicle rise quickly and can cause serious harm if not death.

Be mindful of your pets, ensure they have somewhere cool to avoid the heat and have plenty of water!

Unfotunately, with the hot weather comes the heightened risk of bushfires. Moreton Bay Region is currently under a ‘Very High’ fire danger rating.

With much of Queensland currently experiencing very dry conditions, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have extra staff on standby and waterbombers at the ready.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is warning residents to prepare their homes now and to report any bushfires, regardless of whether they may or may not have already been reported.
