Recognition Award in Moreton Bay Environment

0

On November 4th, Richard Lancaster presented the Mavis Filmer award to the Cannon Family for their remarkable work in the protection of wildlife in Moreton Bay. All Seaside Arts Hub members present applauded this recognition.

Richard pronounced that Ray and Angie Cannon and their daughter have played a vital and prominent role in funding Dugong safety activities and making locals and visitors aware of the impact that us humans have on both the beach and in the bay. There are 5,000 members in the Dugong Society, which they helped form. You can often see the family selling beautiful trinkets that represent the Dugong’s plight, on a stall on Redcliffe Parade.

The form of one of the awards, made by Redcliffe Trophies, is a cute 3 Meerkats trophy.

Mavis Filmer took over running of the Filmers Palace Hotel from 1964 to 2002, and so is a vital part of history in Redcliffe.

Barry Gibb’s Return to an Influx of BeeGee Fans

Barry Gibb opens Stage 2. By Jalyn Photographics.

After much anticipation, Barry Gibb opened the second stage of the “Bee Gees Way” in Redcliffe on Friday the 11th September. He first opened the Bee Gees Way in 2013.

After a cold blast of wind, it was refreshing to hear Barry Gibb speak to the ten thousand strong crowd on the Redcliffe foreshore. He said “there’ll always be a chunk of my heart in Redcliffe” and told of how the brothers got started by singing at the local racetrack. He also noted that his late siblings “would have loved this… it would have been an inspirational day for them”. He even gave us a song “There’s Only Words”.

Fans Keen on Gibbs’ Family History

Talking to Duane Hart of Peninsula Framing, it seems that visitors were keen to do the informal trail of the Gibbs brothers early years… even while the Bee Gees Way was temporarily closed. Many visitors come into his ‘mini-museum’ of photography (creative and historic) and Redcliffe memorabilia.

There Duane helpfully provides free history sheets about the Bee Gees (courtesy of MBRC), a ‘wall of fame’ tribute, and a map where his staff will point out the old house of the Gibbs family, schools, and other places of interest. He says, “There has been a lot of interest in the Bee Gees Redcliffe origins, but I also like to point them down the road as well, to the Redcliffe Museum”.

Redcliffe Museum (Anzac Avenue, Humpybong Park) is full of enthusiastic historical society volunteers. A free booklet on the Bee Gees family is currently out of print, but they are looking at getting some info again to have something for Bee Gees fans to find out more about them. Currently there is a Greek cafe historical exhibition.

Redcliffe II Boat Ready to Save Lives

Redcliffe Coast Guard boat

After a 7 month transformation process and a lot of hard work in fundraising from volunteers, Redcliffe Coast Guard refurbished their 11.9m Noosa cat; ‘Redcliffe Leagues II’ vessel, which was officially relaunched in July. The refurbishment was a very thought out process, which included cabin and stern modifications, to included a specially designed QAS stretcher, which can fit straight into any ambulance in Queensland.

Amyee Rhodes from the Redcliffe Volunteer Coast Guard said that members have been very excited since the return of the vessel. “She is now a state of the art rescue vessel, specifically designed for our needs”, she said.

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard is a 100% voluntary organisation, formed to promote safety in the operation of small craft. It is $44 per year including GST for a regular member, $70 per year including GST for an Associate membership.

Recent activations have underlined the importance of having an EPIRB – locator beacon on board, which allows for the team to pinpoint the exact location of a distress call and respond quickly.

Unfortunately, in recent incidents near Moreton Island, boat owners who found themselves suddenly in the water were not wearing life jackets, and so relied on floating items like esky lids, which is not ideal. A life jacket also helps you be seen on dusk and has a whistle. Any person serious about boating or jet-skiing, should know the importance of having the correct safety equipment onboard and know how to use them in an emergency.

Sutton Street Traders Band Together

0
Redcliffe Sutton Street

Redcliffe Sutton StreetAn idea is brewing in Redcliffe to bring together Sutton Street traders in order to create a village atmosphere and promote trade.

Peter Morley, President of CCIQ Redcliffe City, is championing the vision and offering free marketing plans to traders. The idea is that Sutton Street and Jetty/Cominos Arcade store owners would band together (in co-operation with the Seaside Arts Hub) and create a stimulating visual, arts and entertainment culture on Sutton Street. After some discussions, Peter feels Sutton Street and Arcade traders would be best as a sub-committee of the CCIQ (Chamber of Commerce Industry Queensland) Redcliffe.

Margaret, the manager of Crisp Clothing in Jetty Arcade, said she’d like to see a return of the market atmosphere of the Thursday markets in Sutton Street of 10 years ago. Mr Morley and the core shop owners believe that during September’s Redcliffe Festival stores can take advantage of the closed streets to put items for sale out on the footpath.

While some wait for Council to revitalise the streetscape, Mr Morley believes that it is better if the traders paint up their own shops in bright colours, put on their own after-work gigs, do marketing campaigns, and even “disrupt the establishment” by having artists create pictures outside of the Public Trustee’s offices.

A potential Sutton Street business owner said, “This street could be a really trendy area, with a weekend village feel, like Brunswick Street in Melbourne”. She has a distinct vision for what people like in the way of vintage and collectibles.

Re-opening of the Bee Gees way on September 11 will also bring more visitors through to Sutton Street. Margaret had the idea of putting in bronze discs with Bee Gees hits on it up the street, so people could continue their walk right around. It would certainly make better viewing than what the birds leave behind.

Stocklands’ Newport Project to Lift the Economy

Stockland Isles of Newport Development

Isles of Newport Residential Development

The purchase by Stockland of 143 hectares of land at Newport for $67 million was announced in January this year and already plans are in place to commence development of the plot of land into 1,500 new homes and a retail centre, aiming to create a “village feel” at the Isles of Newport.

Construction was expected to commence in early 2016. This has been brought forward to late 2015, with with the first lots ready for settlement in 2017.

This is the first major land acquisition by Stockland in south east Queensland in 5 years and it is expected that the Isles of Newport Project will follow on from the success of Stockland’s North Lakes estate which is coming to it’s completion stage.

Stockland Isles of Newport Development

The new Newport estate will be well serviced with retail, schools, childcare, health services in close proximity and a rail connection to Brisbane just two kilometres from the estate. The planned community includes a non-tidal lake and high mast boat access to Moreton Bay, a village centre, walking and cycling paths and several parks on the foreshore.

Mayor Allan Sutherland has spoken about the creation of jobs and how the Kippa-Ring to Petrie rail link encourages this type of new development. The homes will surround a proposed non-tidal lake of 28 hectares and include loch access for boats to the Newport Marina. This site also is home to a dedicated bird sanctuary wetland. Many cycle ways and walkways will be built into the design, as well as boutique cafes and stores.

The project is expected to create around 2000 direct or indirect jobs during the development and building phases and at least 900 jobs once the project is complete.

CCIQ Business Membership Makes it Easier

RCCC membership plan

New Redcliffe Chamber of Commerce Membership Plans

As a small/micro business establishing your roots, you may sometimes feel at the mercy of business consultants and coaches that want to charge rather high fees. To aid businesses in the region, CCIQ Redcliffe City and Redcliffe Hive have formed a partnership that includes some regular monthly mentoring.
RCCC membership plan
Even at the “Small” level membership, it also includes access to the Redcliffe Hive, a co-working space in which you can work from, with all the facilities, for one free day access a month. Medium level membership includes for two days a month. Of course, you may add to this at around $30 per day, or ask for the discounted 10-packs.

So, monthly business mentoring from a professional coach (from one to four hours per month, depending on your level), could help move your business along.

The monthly meeting is also well attended by business owners (good time to network from 6-6:30 pm). You can become very aware of what Council and the Economic Development are doing in this region to encourage business. And so most Chamber attendees are rather optimistic about business… rather than the moaners, who tend to stay at home.

Each business at Medium or Large levels has the opportunity to host a meeting and give a four minute talk. The host then sets up visual displays and promotions. Hosting costs $200 and at the medium level the discount is 25%, so $150 is what a medium business would pay.

Call Glenda Willis on 0431 701 474 for any questions about CCIQ Redcliffe City.

Women’s Business Expo proves a Hit

At Womens Expo in Redcliffe

womens business expo, redcliffe hive

Council-managed business space, Redcliffe Hive, hosted a Women’s Business Expo on July 17.

On the day, there were about 15 exhibitors from all kinds of businesses: the law, air conditioning, celebrations and funerals convenor, personal travel agent, success coaching, spiritual health, self-publishing, and more.

Many of the business women spoken to had a great day, making vital connections, attending the presentations when possible, and giving out some information to attendees.

Sue Lester, of Growing Content, did a presentation on “Stop Tripping over Head Trash on Your Path to Success”. I didn’t see this one, but Sue talks about how our inside images of ourselves can affect our lives.

Paula Burgess gave us her insights into “running your business around children”, with her experience in caring for a special needs child and juggling a growing coaching business simultaneously certainly inspiring to attendees. One of the participants was about to have a baby, so advice about managing priorities and giving yourself time will help her when bubs comes along and disrupts the business schedule!

The council plans to host a series of workshops to cover other areas of local business. Any business in the region can become a member at Redcliffe Hive for free and partake in monthly networking nights, get the newsletter, and attend free Tuesday lunchtime events. New Multi-storey Development planned for Redcliffe Parade

0
redcliffe market space

There are long-term plans for the old Crazy Clarks building in Redcliffe Parade to be demolished to make way for a multi-storey, upmarket development.

Plans include for 270 carparks, plus commercial and residential spaces. But the DA has to be approved before any work can proceed — a long procedure. The 1200 sqm space is currently used for the Indoor Markets, a mix of clothing, handmade jewellery, accessories, and teddies which is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

redcliffe market space

The general consensus is that locals hope that any new development will be an improvement in this Redcliffe frontage. Dennis Austen of Mister Real Estate says “it could be more than five years away before anything major happens”. This is because 50% of the project has to be sold before the finance is approved to build it.

The outside wall adjoining this large space and the Jetty Arcade is to have street art painted on it, and tendering for this is now taking place.
