Early Summer heatwave to impact locals

Early-December-heatwave

Summer is just around the corner and Meteorologists are forecasting a heatwave to welcome in the new Season.

A heatwave is defined as three or more days of high Maximum and Minimum temperatures for a region. The heatwave conditions are expected to start on Thursday, with Friday seeing the highest temperatures and could potentially last for five-six days.  Dry air coming from western Queensland will send temperatures soaring over the weekend.

Redcliffe and surrounds are likely to miss out on the worst of the heatwave conditions due to the saving grace of our sea breeze. Areas further inland are expecting to see 40C+ temperatures.

Heatwaves are responsible for taking more lives than any other naturally occurring weather phenomenon.

The Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service and Energex are all in preparation stages and will be on high alert during the heatwave.

Please keep an eye on your fellow Community members, especially the elderly, young, pregnant, manual workers and those with medical conditions. Do not leave children in parked cars during a heatwave, temperatures in a vehicle rise quickly and can cause serious harm if not death.

Be mindful of your pets, ensure they have somewhere cool to avoid the heat and have plenty of water!

Unfotunately, with the hot weather comes the heightened risk of bushfires. Moreton Bay Region is currently under a ‘Very High’ fire danger rating.

With much of Queensland currently experiencing very dry conditions, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have extra staff on standby and waterbombers at the ready.

Yvette D’Ath and Chris Whiting have said that the people of Redcliffe and Murrumba will be better prepared for natural disasters with regional councils receiving a share of grants, totalling more than $2 million, as part of the RACQ Get Ready Queensland program.

Member for Redcliffe, Yvette D’Ath MP said the grants are vital in helping councils create greater awareness about natural disasters and how residents can become more resilient.

“Severe weather is a fact of life in Queensland and education is the key to getting ready for whatever comes our way. Extreme weather doesn’t just mean cyclones, floods and storms, we also face droughts and heat waves,” Ms D’Ath said.

Member for Murrumba, Chris Whiting MP said the grants will assist with activities such as school emergency awareness, clean-up days, information stalls in shopping centres, disaster preparedness kits and the purchase of emergency equipment.

“Queensland has to deal with its fair share of natural disasters and a cyclone or storm can leave families for days with no electricity or running water, so we want to make sure our community is prepared,” Mr Whiting said.

“This year Moreton Bay Regional Council will receive $133,000 in Get Ready funding. Our region faces its own unique challenges during a natural disaster. That’s why council staff on the ground tailor the strategy to meet the specific needs of our community.

“It’s about asking yourself, ‘what’s your plan?’ We want people to prepare for an emergency which can include simple things like cleaning up around the house if we know severe weather is on the way.”

The RACQ Get Ready Queensland campaign is a year-round, all-hazards disaster preparedness and resilience building program with each of the 77 Councils as well as the Weipa Town Authority receiving grants totalling $2.1 million.

Councils are encouraged to focus on activities that promote community connectedness, understanding of natural disaster risks and vulnerability, planning and preparation for disasters and knowledge of what local resources are available to them.

RACQ Get Ready Week runs from 10 – 16 October, 2016.

“Design work on this project is currently underway. Consultation with stakeholders will commence once these plans are finalised.” Ms D’Ath said.

“I welcome the addition of almost 3km of cycle lanes to the network in the Moreton Bay region. These new lanes, and the Shared Pathway on the Moreton Bay Rail Link will provide choice for local and visiting cyclists,” Mr Whiting said

“As a cyclist myself I am pleased to see these much anticipated lanes added to Anzac Avenue, providing another active transport option for people across the region to get out and active.”

“This is the first upgrade of the road surface on Anzac Ave in almost a decade, and is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to improving Queensland’s infrastructure.” Mr Whiting said.

Ms D’Ath and Mr Whiting said that they look forward to the upgrade works commencing in early 2017.
